Your GFN session.
With a desktop.

A real Windows desktop inside your GeForce NOW session. Develop, edit video, run local models, play — on a machine that isn't yours, and doesn't stay. No installer. No account. Nothing to uninstall.

One email when your invite is ready. Nothing else.

  • Priority or Ultimate tier
  • Any device
  • No admin rights

One desktop.
More than one job.

The session is a fast machine with a real GPU. GhostShell is the part that makes it behave like a computer instead of a kiosk — so the machine stops being just a games window.

Develop

A terminal, an editor, and a browser that runs your stack.

Review a pull request, run a script, debug something on a machine with more headroom than your laptop. PowerShell 7, Notepad++ and a real file manager are already on the desktop — and VSCodium is one download away when you want a full editor.

  • PowerShell 7
  • Notepad++
  • Waterfox
  • 7-Zip
  • VSCodium

Create

A powerhouse, from a thin client, anywhere.

Download DaVinci Resolve in the session and cut on the session's GPU — the laptop in front of you only has to survive the stream. A download manager that can finish a 4 GB source file and a real file manager are already there.

  • DaVinci Resolve
  • Waterfox
  • Free Download Manager
  • PeaZip
  • Explorer++

Run models locally

Put the GPU to work on something that stays yours.

LM Studio is already on the desktop. Pull a model, run it on the session's GPU, and keep the weights on the persistent drive, when your plan has one — no API key, no per-token bill, nothing leaving the machine.

  • LM Studio
  • PowerShell 7
  • System Informer

Play

Launchers, libraries and shortcuts that behave.

Your storefront launchers open, your library shows up, your shortcuts stay where you put them. The desktop is the point — the games are the reason you noticed.

  • Epic Games
  • Ubisoft Connect
  • Shortcut maker
  • Game manager

+ downloaded in the session — everything else is already on the desktop

Your keys work again.

In a GeForce NOW session, Alt+Tab is eaten by the client before Windows ever sees it. GhostShell rebuilds the switch four different ways — so it works even when a key never arrives.

Press the keys.

  1. 01 Native switcher Ctrl+Tab plays the real Alt+Tab chord inside the session.
  2. 02 Passthrough If the client delivers the real key, it passes through untouched.
  3. 03 Mouse An on-screen switch and a Next Window icon. The mouse always arrives.
  4. 04 Built-in hook A low-level hook owns the keys before the hotkey runtime is ready.

Leave nothing behind.

The machine is wiped the moment your session ends. GhostShell keeps its own folder, its logs and your saves on the persistent drive — when your plan has one — and puts the original shell back on command.

  • No installerOne file, run in place.
  • No accountNothing to sign into.
  • No telemetryLogs never leave the session.

Changed your mind? GhostShell.exe --recover restores the factory shell.

Three minutes, once.

You install nothing. You replace one file inside a session, and the desktop is there.

  1. 1

    Install a game

Pick any Install-to-Play title in your library and install it. Priority or Ultimate tier — the free tier has no install catalogue.

  2. 2

    Save the payload over it

Open the library's built-in browser, save the payload over the game's own executable, and confirm the overwrite. That single file is the whole install.

  3. 3

    Press play

The game starts GhostShell instead. Thirty to ninety seconds later you are looking at your own desktop.

Nothing is installed on your machine. The payload runs inside the session, so a Mac, a Chromebook or a phone works exactly like a gaming PC.

The exact steps, for when you are already in a session

Turn off Steam Cloud for the title first — Properties → General → uncheck Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud. Otherwise Steam restores the original executable and the swap silently does nothing.

  1. Steam Library → filter Install-to-Play → install a title.
  2. Game page → Open website → ⋮ → new tab. This is Steam's own browser; the save dialog exists nowhere else.
  3. Paste the payload URL, choose Save As, and put the full target path into the File name field — that overrides both the name and the folder.
  4. Launch the title and choose Play anyway when Steam warns about the files.
  5. To keep the swap between sessions, move the install to I:\user\SteamShadow and repeat step 3 once with the new path. This needs the persistent-storage add-on — without it the session is wiped.

Always close the session with the Start menu's Shutdown Session — not by closing windows. That is what keeps the persistent drive mounted.

Made to be checked.

GhostShell doesn't hide its keyboard layer. It is a plain-text script, written out where you can read it, running on the official open-source AutoHotkey v2 runtime — so the part that touches your keyboard is the part you can audit.

  • Plain textThe hotkey layer is a readable script, not an encrypted blob.
  • No elevationPer-user settings only. No admin prompt, ever.
  • Local logsDiagnostics are written to your disk, nowhere else.

Questions, answered.

Does it work on the free tier?

No. Install-to-Play titles need the Priority or Ultimate tier — the free tier has no install catalogue, and that is not something a client-side tool can change.

What happens to the game I swap?

It starts GhostShell instead of the game. Use your library's verify option, or run --recover, and the original executable is back. You can also just pick the smallest title you own.

Does it touch my account?

No. It never asks for credentials and never talks to NVIDIA or Steam on your behalf. Your session, your login, your hardware — it only changes what runs on the desktop.

Which devices does it run on?

Any device that runs GeForce NOW. GhostShell never touches your machine — it runs inside the session — a Mac, a Chromebook or a phone works just the same. What you need is a Priority or Ultimate tier and an Install-to-Play title.

Why early access?

Because the hard part is not the desktop — it is the client. Key delivery, drive mounting and foreground rules differ between tiers, regions and builds. Real sessions are the only honest test, so access goes out in small groups.
